This is a handy infographic to illustrate your options after GCSEs. The Government raised the “participation age” meaning you now have to stay in education or training until you are 18 years old. Your options after GCSEs are:
STAY IN FULL TIME EDUCATION
You could go on to study A Levels. This is a good route if you are planning on going to University. If your school does not have a sixth form, you can attend a local College and study vocational or academic courses. This is good if you want to learn a trade like construction, hair & beauty, engineering for example. Many Level 3.
EARN & LEARN WITH AN APPRENTICESHIP
Apprenticeships are a superb way to get nationally recognised qualifications while you work in a real job. You are able to earn & learn at the same time while gaining valuable work experience. In many cases, when you complete the apprenticeship your employer may progress you onto a higher level or offer a permanent position!
JOIN A TRAINEESHIP SCHEME IF YOU ARE NOT READY FOR APPRENTICESHIPS
A traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that helps you to become ‘work ready’. It is designed to help young people aged 16 to 24 who don’t yet have the appropriate skills or experience. It provides the essential work preparation training, English, maths and work experience needed to secure an apprenticeship or employment.
STUDY PART TIME
If you’re working, in self-employment or volunteering for more than 20 hours a week you can also study part-time. Colleges and training providers offer a large range of training courses that are part-time, including A levels and work-related qualifications like BTECs or NVQs.
